If your tax return is still in progress, it’s often because one or two documents have not arrived yet. That’s very common during tax season. Many forms are issued at different times throughout the winter, and investment or insurance documents in particular can arrive later than expected.
To help make the process easier, we’ve created a simple Tax Preparation Documents Checklist to help identify items that may still be needed to complete your return.
Most taxpayers will need a combination of income documents, personal information, and records related to deductions or credits. Common examples include W-2 forms from employers, 1099 forms for contract or investment income, and documentation for items like mortgage interest, childcare expenses, or education costs.
Health insurance documentation is another item that can sometimes be overlooked. If you had health coverage through the Marketplace, Form 1095-A is required to complete your return.
It’s also important to share any IRS or State tax notices you may have received, even if they seem unrelated to the current tax year. These notices can sometimes affect how a return is prepared or filed.
